Binders & Specialty Products
First impressions are often lasting ones. A well made binder, case, or portfolio lends distinction to your loose-leaf documentation or presentation, and can help your business make a positive visual statement.

Whether your design goals relate more to form or to function, ABCO delivers. We manufacture vinyl and polyethylene products in almost any shape, size, or styles, large or small. Wide or narrow. Plain or padded. Simple or elaborate. In a variety of colors or finishes. Silkscreened in one, two, three, or more colors. Or offset printed for a special effect. Decorated with embossing, debossing, or foil stamping. With or without pockets. From one of our 3,000 dies, or from the far reaches of your imagination. The possibilities are virtually endless.

The Spectrum of Options and Solutions

Every binder and specialty product that we manufacture is tailored to your precise specifications, so you will not need to compromise on any design aspect - from size, shape, color and capacity, to material, number of pockets, type of rings, and decorative effects. And while you can expect ABCO's quality and service to be second-to-none, you'll also find that our prices are very competitive.

Ring Binders

Ring binders are ideal for binding a variety of loose-leaf documents, including sales presentations, software and training manuals, parts catalogs, cookbooks, directories, video cassette and CD holders, even memo pads. Our binders are customized to your specifications to accommodate any sheet size, capacity and graphic requirements. And because we know that ring binders are among the hardest-working business tools today, we build in durability and quality. We use only the finest virgin vinyl and polyethylene. Our nickel-plated ring metals are top quality - precision aligned and geared to the proper tension for the strongest holding power, with or without opening and closing boosters.

Clear-Vu Binders

When time is of the essence, the next best thing to a customized binder is a Clear-Vu binder. Ready for immediate delivery, these three-ring binders have full clear pockets on the front cover and spine, and one five-inch horizontal pocket on the inside front cover. Insert either offset or digitally printed sheets which we can print and insert, or you can provide, and you're ready in a snap with a professional binder. These white suedene vinyl binders are available in two varieties: round rings are available with ½" to 3" ring diameters and slant-D rings are available with 1" to 3" ring diameters.

Post Binders

When the information is staggering and piled too high for a standard loose-leaf binder, post binders are an excellent alternative. Post binders are available with either fixed or expandable spines, which allow the spine width to be adjusted according to the number of sheets in the document. Post binders are a good choice for catalogs and large manuals.

Wrap-Around Ring Binders

Wrap-around ring binders feature an extended flap and Velcro enclosure for a finished look that keeps contents neat and secure. The wrap-around style is ideal for binders that contain inside pockets, and to hold additional items. They are very useful for conventions, seminars, meetings and training where there are a lot of supplemental materials.

Easel Binders

A mainstay of sales and training professionals, the easel binder is a carrying case and desktop presentation tool all in one. Ours are available in two styles: a break-back easel binder that makes for easy reading; and a platform easel binder that is perfect for desktop presentations. Both types of binders are customized to your specific needs, including sheet size, capacity, color, material, and decorative effects.

Specialty Vinyl Products

Vinyl's durability and economy make it an ideal material for a wide variety of business applications and promotional items. With a die-maker on staff, ABCO can design and manufacture nearly any vinyl product imaginable. Among our specialty items are custom portfolios and business cases, magazine and book covers, vinyl boxes, business card holders, sheet protectors, certificate holders, file and document jackets.

Decorative Touches and Accessories

Silkscreening

Silkscreening is the most common method of printing on binders. In this process, ink is applied to a screen that has been burned with the original art, so that non-printing areas are blocked. Ink is then applied to the screen and forced through a fine mesh onto the surface of the binder. In keeping with industry standards, we use the Pantone Matching System, but we will match any ink color that you require.

Foil Stamping

Foil stamping provides a distinctive touch to a binder. The image is created using a foil that releases from its backing when stamped with a heated die. Foil stamping allows decorating with colors and effects that inks cannot achieve, especially because foil is opaque and ink is not. Foils are available in metallic and matte finishes.

Embossing and Debossing

Embossing and debossing are elegant touches that can be used alone or in combination with other decorative techniques. An embossed image is pressed into the vinyl so that it lies above the surface. A debossed image is stamped into the vinyl so that it lies below the surface.

Inserts and Entrapments

Entrapments provide the ultimate flexibility in economically reproducing full-color artwork on binders. In this process, a printed sheet is trimmed to size, inserted between the vinyl cover and a clear overlay, and sealed. ABCO offers offset and on-demand printing services that make inserts and entrapments an attractive option. Ask your ABCO representative for details.

Options and Accessories

You can choose to customize your binder with any number of options, such as foam padding for a luxurious feel or sheet lifters as an added safeguard. We can combine decorative methods for a unique look, utilize for a sophisticated image, and offset print on vinyl for a one-of-kind presentation. We can personalize binders or customize cases with names or initials. Adding an accessory or two such as a business card holder, an inside and / or back pocket, and label holders also lends a finishing touch to your vinyl product, while increasing its functionality.

Binder Basics

Ring Style Ring style is mostly a matter of preference. There are three basic types:
  • Round rings are the most common type of ring.
  • D rings are shaped like a reverse "D." Sheets stack on the straight edge, which allows them to lie flat in the binder. D rings hold more sheets than standard round rings.
  • Slant-D rings use an angled flat edge that is wider at the bottom than the top. This feature allows a greater number of sheets to lie flat in the binder. Slant-D rings hold more sheets than other ring styles, and are recommended for large-capacity binders.
  • In addition to the above there are also specialty metals available which we will be happy to discuss with you.

Ring Size

Binders are sized according to the diameter of the ring, not the width of the spine. Ring size determines the binder's sheet capacity. The size of a round ring equals its inside diameter. D and slant-D ring sizes are determined by measuring the length of the straight leg.

Sheet Capacity

Ring Dimension Capacity (20# bond)
1/2" 100 sheets
3/4" 150 sheets
1" 200 sheets
1 1/2" 300 sheets
2" 400 sheets
2 1/2" 500 sheets
3" 600 sheets

Standard Materials and Colors

All binders and specialty items can be made using French calf or Suedene vinyl. Many items can also be manufactured in polyethylene, a rigid plastic that is especially durable. Ask your ABCO representative about material and color options.

Ten Steps to a Better Binder

ABCO has been building better binders for more than four decades. The process requires both quality materials and an eye for detail.

  1. Depending upon the ring size and capacity, an appropriate weight of board is selected. The board is cut for the front panel, back panel and spine.
  2. The vinyl is "sheeted," or cut to a slightly larger dimension than the size of the finished binder.
  3. The edges are carefully trimmed to a precise 45 degree angle using a guillotine cutter. This process insures the square corners and straight edges necessary for accuracy of the registration during silkscreening.
  4. Prior to manufacturing, a proof - blueline, color key, match print or actual product sample is prepared for the customer's approval.
  5. With approval, the vinyl covers are decorated either by silkscreening, foil stamping, embossing, debossing, and / or appliquéd-or entrapped with an insert.
  6. Boards and liners are precisely positioned, and sealed using radio-frequency waves.
  7. Excess vinyl is scrapped and recycled.
  8. The nearly complete binders are sent to the riveting department for rivets, rings, clips, or other metals.
  9. Each binder is carefully inspected to ABCO's exacting quality standards.
  10. Binders are slipsheeted to prevent offsetting of ink, then sent to the finishing department if contents and tabs are being inserted. Otherwise, they are boxed and readied for shipment to the customer.
